What Radon is
What it is
Radon is a natural radioactive gas, odourless, colourless and tasteless. It piles up within indoor environments thus becoming extremely dangerous for health. Alpha particles released during the inhaled gas radioactive decay process might cause severe damage to lung cells.
Where it is
Radon naturally leaks from ground, from water and from some building materials. In fact, it is released by any material with even the faintest trace of uranium such as granite, tuff, porphyry, basalt and pozzolanic cements.
Why it is dangerous
Radon has been recognized by the WHO as the second risk factor for the occurrence of lung cancer (in excess of 10% of occurrences are deemed to be caused by Radon exposure). In Italy, 1.500 to 6.000 deaths per year are deemed to be caused by Radon. In the US, one house out of 15 is considered to be at risk.
